Former prime Minister Helen Clark's mum has died.
Irish born Margaret Clark, nee McMurray, 87, died in Tauranga Hospital this morning.
She had been a primary school teacher and is survived by her husband, George, and four daughters.
A spokesman for Ms Clark said she was with her mother when she ''passed away peacefully" early this morning.
Former Labour MP and friend Chris Carter said Ms Clark had been back in New Zealand because her mother had been unwell for several weeks.
He said she had suffered from pneumonia.
Ms Clark had been by her mother's side the entire time she had been back in New Zealand, except for a short trip to Oamaru, he said.
Her funeral will be held in Waihi on Monday but the time was yet to be announced.
