Bank of Uganda in Diaspora Bond move

In a move that perhaps recognizes the economic clout that Ugandans living and working abroad hold in Uganda’s economy today, Bank of Uganda together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently initiated a feasibility study to find out if they (Ugandans) are willing to invest in the Ugandan Diaspora bond.

A Diaspora bond refers to a financial instrument that targets potential investors who have emigrated to other countries.

The survey is intended to understand the capacity and constraints of the Ugandan Diaspora to participate in national development through investing in international Diaspora bonds.

UN's Helen Clark: CO2 could cause agricultural yields to fall 50% in some African countries by 2050; CO2 may also cause meningitis epidemics

Helen Clark: “Why Tackling Climate Change Matters for Development” | UNDP
Some African countries could see agricultural yields decrease by fifty per cent by 2050.
...The average price of staple foods is now expected to rise over the long term, with some scenarios suggesting that wheat prices will be locked in at fifteen per cent higher in 2050.
...
The Arctic sea ice has just reached its lowest level in thousands of years.
...
Climate variability and extreme conditions such as floods can trigger epidemics of diseases, such as diarrhoea, malaria, dengue fever, and meningitis. ...The death toll from cyclones in Bangladesh, for example, was reduced from around 500,000 people in 1970 to 3,000 in 2007, thanks in part to improved early warning systems.
...
Recent estimates suggest that our carbon-intensive economies cost the world around US$1.2 trillion a year -or 1.6 per cent of total global GDP.

The United Nations needs a greater role in coordinating global economic decisions, with finance ministers attending a beefed up body to ensure not just the largest economies set the agenda, says UN Development Programme chair Helen Clark.

With organisations such the G20, comprising of the world's 20 biggest economies, dominating measures to shore up growth after the global financial crisis, many other states were at risk of being affected without having a voice, Clark said in a lecture in Wellington.

That could be eased by a stronger economic body at the United Nations provided it could attract the world's finance ministers to help coordinate a global response.

Despite UNDP's failure with LOTFA in Afghanistan: the UN's DSG Jan Eliasson wants UNDP to do more police related work ! ( i.e.: Like the major corruption in Afghanistan)

8 November 2012 – Now is the time to come together and promote the work of the United Nations for the rule of law, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said today, noting the different comparative advantages within the world body that complement one another and can be used to achieve this goal.

“If we work together, we can be an effective force in strengthening the rule of law. If we forge a common approach, we can build solid foundations for peace and security in post-conflict States,” he said in a presentation, delivered at UN Headquarters in New York, to the UN System Chief Executives Board, which brings together the heads of UN organizations with the aim of enhancing cooperation and coordination amongst them.

Mr. Eliasson said that to strengthen the work of the UN, it is necessary to “break down the walls” between its activities in the three pillars of peace, development and human rights, and adopt a holistic and integrated approach. “The rule of law can help us solve concrete problems, cutting across all three pillars of our work,” he noted.

UNDP joins global Climate and Clean Air Coalition with call for urgent action to avert catastrophic impacts

San Francisco, 8 November 2012 - Climate change threatens to undermine hard-won human development gains and the longer the world waits to act the more costly the damages and solutions will become, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark said today.
Speaking at Stanford University in California, Helen Clark warned that without more coordinated global action to tackle climate change it will be increasingly hard to reduce poverty in all its dimensions and the costs of adaptation will also rise steeply everywhere.
“UNDP recognizes that the world’s 2.6 billion poorest people will be hardest hit by climate change and that its impacts could reverse decades of human development gains unless pre-emptive action is taken,” Miss Clark said.
“For the world to stay under the two degree Celsius increase in temperature, set as a threshold beyond which there is believed to be catastrophic and irreversible change to our climate, we all need to do much more, first to stabilise and then to reduce emissions radically,” she said.

UN Representative Calls For Establishing A 'World Capital'--In Islamic Istanbul

The world needs a global capital and it should be the capital of Islamic Turkey, Istanbul, according to a UN special representative. Richard Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights, wrote a Nov. 1, 2012, opinion piece for the controversial al Jazeera English site calling for a "global capital" because of integration "by markets, by globally constituted battlefields, by changing geopolitical patterns."

While Turkey is a longstanding U.S. ally and a member of NATO, its nearly 80 million population is 99.8 percent Muslim, according to the CIA Factbook. Its Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has had several run-ins with Israel over access to Gaza. In March, he urged Israel to "stop the brutal attack against Palestinians and stop the massacre and bloodshed."

Launched in the capital, Yerevan, on November 1, the site is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It is an attempt to encourage residents of Armenia’s largest city, by some accounts home to just under half of the country’s population of 3 million, to engage with the municipality, which became an elected body in 2009, following the constitutional amendments of 2005.

Who's doing business with the UN? – get the data

Developing and emerging economies, led by India and Russia, are winning a growing share of UN business but American companies still dominate

The UN spends billions of dollars each year buying goods and services for peacekeeping, humanitarian and development projects around the world. In the UK, this has made the global body a key target for the government's aid-funded business service, which seeks to connect British companies with the lucrative business opportunities offered by development finance.

The share of UN business going to rich countries has long been a source of contention for developing countries. Two general assembly resolutions, in 2005 and 2007, pushed the UN to increase opportunities for firms from developing and transition economies to win its contracts. In 2006, China and the G77 group of developing countries "noted with dismay" the small share of UN business going to the majority of member states...
