Labour MP Charles Chauvel is resigning from Parliament to take up a job with the United Nations in New York.
Mr Chauvel, a List MP, said he had resigned effective from March 11.
He will work for the UN Development Programme organisation former Prime Minister Helen Clark leads - as an advisor on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.
Mr Chauvel said Ms Clark was not involved in his selection - "I don't think she even knows I have the job."
He said he had been a member of the UN Global Commission on HIV and the Law for the past two years and had found that work challenging.
"The new full-time role with the UN presents a similar opportunity to make a difference and I look forward to the challenges that it will present."
Former MP Carol Beaumont is next on Labour's list - followed by Kelvin Davis.

Helen Clark: A Socialist ex-PM living it large "Trump Style" on a "UN Salary" ...worries if her hubby back in New Zealand changed her 20 yrs old washing machine !

 Trump World Tower

She loves New York - "the T-shirt was made for me" - and her nice apartment with views of the UN building and the Chrysler Building and the East River. I said it amused me that her apartment was in the Trump Towers - meaning it was a bit funny for a socialist. She didn't think it was a very good joke. "Well, it's very handy to the UN."

She's still run around in a government limo when she's home, but even socialist ex-PMs get that perk.
She did think it was funny when I suggested it might be a bit annoying for Peter when she comes home, which wasn't a joke. "Ha, ha. I unsettle his habits." I asked if he'd bought a new washing machine. (He once told me she wouldn't allow a new one, despite it being 20 years old and second-hand when they bought it.) "He did! He bought a new TV too. I've given up. He runs the house. I'll re-establish control some time, but not just yet. Ha, ha, ha!"

A United Nations development program director says New Zealand is the ideal country to work as a prostitute.

UNDP director of HIV, health and development practice Mandeep Dhaliwal praised New Zealand's progressive prostitution laws as promoting safety and slowing the spread of HIV.

The call came alongside a new UN report that compared New Zealand to Asian and Pacific nations and recommended that they also decriminalise prostitution.

The report - Sex Work and the Law - found there was no evidence that criminalising prostitution had prevented the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

New South Wales was the only other territory in the region that had decriminalised sex work and the report noted both areas had "extremely low or nonexistent" transmission of sexual diseases among prostitutes.
